About BEACON Small Business Solutions

BEACON Small Business Solutions was created in June 1996, in Matthews, NC. The organization was initially a franchise of General Business Services, which later became Century Small Business Solutions, a nationally recognized provider of accounting and tax services to individuals and small businesses.
We moved to the Knightsbridge subdivision of Fort Mill in June 1998, and by 2005 the business had grown to four full-time employees operating a network of 6 computers.
In 2005 the franchise relationship was terminated, and the company subsequently adopted the BEACON Small Business Solutions name, logo, and identity. Initially operated as an unincorporated Sole Proprietorship, the business was incorporated in January, 2006 as a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC).
In February 2006, the business moved into a newly-constructed office space in Baxter Place located in the Village of Baxter, Fort Mill, SC.
John W. (Bill) Belchee has operated the business on a full-time basis since the beginning in 1996. Julie McGirr joined Beacon on a full-time basis in August 2003. Emily Lail joined the team in December 2005. Our most recent addition Charlotte Snyder joined in September 2006.
The Company focuses its energies and its resources in 3 areas:
- Tax: Year-round preparation and consultation of individual, corporate and partnership tax returns, as well as sales tax returns, property tax returns, and other business-associated issues.
- Financial Reporting: Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Bank Reconciliation, and a Things We Noticed report individually written for each business owner.
- Consulting: Bill has maintained a QuickBooks consulting and design practice for 10 years. They are also widely regarded as speakers on a variety of small business topics.
The Company is strongly committed to using 21st Century technologies:
- E-files all individual, partnership, and corporate tax returns, both Federal and State.
- On-line reporting and payment authorization of all Sales Tax Returns for all clients.
- On-line reporting of monthly financial statements for all clients.
- Bill is a speaker at national conferences in small business accounting software.

I am an Accredited Tax Preparer, issued by Accreditation Council for Accountancy and Taxation, and a member of the following organizations:
- National Society of Accountants
- National Association of Tax Professionals
- North Carolina Society of Accountants
I earned an MBA from the BABCOCK GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT at Wake Forest University, and I am the treasurer and a founding member of Friends in Business, Fort Mill, SC.
Among my other duties and experiences, I have been the associate administrator for NORTHERN HOSPITAL OF SURRY COUNTY, Mt. Airy, NC, and the national marketing manager for Healthcare Computing Systems, BURROUGHS CORPORATION (now UNISYS), Charlotte, NC.
I served four years as Captain, United States Air Force, and spent 1 year with First Turkish Air Force, Republic of Turkey.
I am an instructor for graduate school test preparation courses - GMAT (MBA) and GRE (Master’s and Doctoral), an instructor in small business courses for CPCC, and adjunct faculty, York Technical College - teaching QuickBooks and Principles of Management.
I have been married since 1978 to Gerri Belchee, with whom I have parented two children, now grown, and I am the chairman of the board for Peace Moravian Church.
